What Is Yellow Fever Virus?

Yellow fever is caused by a virus spread to people through the bites of infected mosquitoes. The virus can also spread from mother to baby during birth and likely spreads through blood transfusion and organ transplantation. In some cases, it can cause death and there is currently no treatment.

Where Is Yellow Fever Virus Found?

Yellow Fever virus is found in tropical and subtropical areas of Africa and South America.

  • Encephalitis (Swelling of your brain)
  • Vomiting blood
  • Body aches and chills
  • Fatigue

Who Should Receive the Yellow Fever Vaccine?

  • People traveling or moving to countries in Africa or South America where there is a risk.
  • People who have a greater than 12-hour layover in a country with a risk.

Why Should I Get a Yellow Fever Vaccine?

  • Vaccination is the absolute best way to prevent infection.
  • There is no treatment for Yellow Fever disease and it can cause death.
  • Some countries require proof of Yellow Fever vaccination for entry into the country.

Yellow Fever vaccine must be given at least 10 days before departure to be considered valid.
