Suicide Prevention

Southeastern Idaho Public Health’s Suicide Prevention program works to raise awareness, provide education, and connect individuals and communities with resources that support mental health and save lives.

Hands joined together representing suicide prevention, support, and connection.

What does this program do?

  • Collaborates with SIPH programs and community partners across the district for coordinated suicide prevention efforts
  • Organizes and provides suicide prevention trainings such as VitalCog, QPR, ASIST, Mental Health First Aid, and SafeSide
  • Educates the community about available resources, including the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline and local mobile response teams
  • Distributes items that support Lethal Means Safety, including gun locks

How does this program benefit individuals and communities?

  • Raises awareness and helps normalize conversations around mental health and suicide prevention
  • Provides tools and resources to help individuals support themselves and others during a crisis
  • Strengthens collaboration between organizations for more effective, coordinated prevention efforts
  • Educates communities on healthy ways to cope with stress, sadness, and grief while encouraging help-seeking

What is most important for people to understand?

Suicide is preventable, and support is available. This program is flexible and responsive to community needs, helping connect individuals with the right resources when they need them most.

If a specific request cannot be met directly, the program works with partners to ensure individuals are connected to someone who can help.

What would happen without this program?

Without suicide prevention efforts through SIPH, communities would face fewer coordinated resources, reduced awareness, and fewer opportunities for early intervention. Suicide rates could remain high without consistent outreach, education, and access to support systems.

Suicide prevention requires long-term commitment, collaboration, and community involvement. Every life saved through these efforts makes a meaningful impact.
